The Cyclists' Defence Fund exists to help cyclists, you can see how we do this in general terms on our aims page.

We hope that we have been able to provide signposts to relevant advice.

The Fund is able, under some circumstances to provide financial support for a legal action. An application form is available for downloading:

Please be aware that we may need additional information and cannot guarantee to be able to support any case.

We presently have some funding available to commission small-scale research into areas where cyclists may have a legal problem or difficulty. Does your organisation, or your members, have a legal problem that needs looking at? Some examples may be:

  • How can barriers on off-road cycle tracks be legally challenged?
  • What changes to the law would be necessary to allow tricycles to have the same legal rights as bicycles?
  • Is a unicycle a vehicle in English or Scottish law? What are the consequences of this for unicyclists?
  • Are there easy to achieve changes to the law that could be effective at getting obstacles, such as hedge trimmings, removed from the highway?

In addition to the above research, we are able to provide small grants (£500-£2,000) to support projects which help raise awareness of the law relating to cycling.

There's no formal application process to access either of these funding streams, contact us by post or email and we will give your proposal our consideration.
